Polish Media Issues protest against distortion of history by Haaretz
Dear Haaretz,
Your article “Auschwitz Is Rewriting Holocaust History, One Tweet at a Time” shows your standards are getting worse and no fact checking is being undertaken.
Clearly your (ignorant) correspondent is not aware of the factual history or the need for accuracy. This is what Szymon Datner actually wrote:
“I estimated the number of surviving Jews – chiefly thanks to assistance provided by the Polish population – at approximately 100,000. It may be similarly estimated that another 100,000 Jewish victims were captured by the occupying authorities and murdered” (Source: Jewish Historical Institute Bulletin No. 75 (1970), German Nazi Crimes against Jews who escaped from ghettos).
So, Haaretz, who is making up the history? It’s not Auschwitz so it must be yourselves and Ariel Sobel!
By the way, that’s the same Datner whose research was falsified and completely distorted by Jan Grabowski.
It could be considered a form of Holocaust Denial and Distortion under IHRA definitions to suggest the concentration or death camps were Polish. “Attempts to blur the responsibility for the establishment of concentration and death camps devised and operated by Nazi Germany by putting blame on other nations or ethnic groups.”
“Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, reiterates and emphasizes that the term “Polish death camps” is erroneous. The concentration and extermination camps were built and operated by the Germans in Nazi-occupied Poland with the express purpose of murdering and annihilating the Jews of Europe within the framework of the “Final Solution.” The correct way to combat these historical misrepresentations is not by criminalizing these statements but by reinforcing educational activities.” https://www.yadvashem.org/press-release/01-february-2018-10-04.html
“There is no doubt that the term “Polish death camps” is a historical misrepresentation! The extermination camps were set up in Nazi-occupied Poland in order to murder the Jewish people within the framework of the “Final Solution.” https://www.yadvashem.org/press-release/27-january-2018-18-43.html
Simon Wiesenthal Center:
“While the term ‘Polish death camps’ is historically inaccurate and should not be used under any circumstances,…” http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=8776547&ct=15011709
PM Netanyahu:
“We have always agreed that the term “Polish concentration/death camps” is blatantly erroneous and diminishes the responsibility of Germany for establishing those camps.” https://mfa.gov.il/MFA/PressRoom/2018/Pages/PM-Netanyahu-s-remarks-on-the-Polish-Law-27-June-2018.aspx
GERMAN Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, stated on February 4, 2018: “There is absolutely no doubt about who bears responsibility for the extermination camps, about who operated them and murdered millions of European Jews there: it was Germans. This
Returning to the IHRA.
“…the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) wishes to state that it shares the Polish government’s opposition to the historically unsupportable use of the terms “Polish Death Camps” or “Polish Camps” to refer to the camps and sites of persecution and murder established by Nazi Germany on invaded and occupied Polish soil. We strongly urge our members to stop using this term in discourse and in publications, and we encourage others to stop using it as well.”
