Invitation to the conference on Capitol Hill on September 7th, 2018
Thanks to the initiative taken by members of Polish diaspora in the United States a conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of regaining independence by Poland will take place on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on September 7, 2018. The conference titled “Poland Reborn, 100 Years of Struggle and Glory” will shed light on the decisive moments in Poland’s history during the past 100 years.
The event initiated among others by the Coalition of Polish Americans will discuss the following topics:
- September 1939 invasion and destruction of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
- WWII extermination of millions of Polish citizens and destruction of Polish economy and culture.
- 1945 – 1956 Stalinist oppression and extermination of the Polish underground.
- 1975 – 1989 Solidarity Movement struggle for independence.
- 1989 – present: the struggle of Poland to overcome a legacy of Russian and German oppression.
Among invited guests and speakers are members of the US Congress, historians, and journalists.
One of the subjects presented during the conference will be the Katyn Massacre, a massacre of 22,000 innocent Polish citizens by the Soviet NKVD, which had profound consequences for the postwar history of Poland. Today, attempts are made to erase this tragic event from the public space and from the memory of Poles and Americans. The struggle for Katyn Monument in Jersey City shows the determination of Poles to oppose totalitarian systems and to preserve universal symbols of history.
